Here's a quick update to let you know that the dates for the Winter Corporate Games have changed. We're movin' to March baby!
Here are the dates:
Thursday, March 18th - Wednesday, March 31st.
Hopefully, this time schedule won't interfere with your basketball brackets for the "Madness" if ya know what we mean. Does the NCAA have that name trademarked? ;) So, get entered, get pumped and let's get physical (shout out to Olivia Newton John) !

That's right, the 2010 Winter Corporate Games are coming! Can I get a WOOHOO? Now, whether you love or hate winter (see clip art hee,hee) I think we can all agree that January and February are pretty icky, nothin' going on kind of months. That's where we come in! We're still working on the event dates and all of the particulars but we will keep you posted. As soon as we know, you'll know.
2010 may seem kind of far off but the holidays will be over and the seasonal affective disorder will have kicked in and you will be needing something to jump start those endorphins. So keep checking back!

It was our first time doing the Build a Boat Event and it rocked. We just might have to add it as a regular event next year.

Woohoo! The games have officially begun! We had a great turnout on Saturday for the 5K, Wellness Walk and the Tent Event. All the tents were awesome and everyone had a great time. Thank you for spending your Saturday morning with us!

We're all about soccer today. Our soccer tournament will be played August 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st. We will be playing in the University of Utah Field House. One of the main rules that the Field House would like us to relay is that they do not allow anything but water in the facility. I repeat, WATER ONLY!!!!! Okay, now that little tid bit is out of the way we can move on to some rules of the game.
Co-Ed is 7 on 7 and must have 3 men and 3 women on the field while the goalkeeper may be either male or female creating the 7th player. A minimum of 5 players must be present to play or the game will be declared a forfeit.
Equipment and Uniform: a molded cleat or athletic shoe must be worn to play. Shin guards are recommended, but not required. All players must either wear their team shirt or a shirt of the color.

Answer to Ultimate Question

Hey!

Here's an answer to a question posted by one of our followers. "The calendar shows as a tournament over 5 days. However, the instructions shows that it's a one day double elimation tournament. Do we know the times for this?"

Ulitimate will be played in a double elimination tournament format in the evenings. We could use up to five evenings which will be determined by how many teams sign up. Schedules will be made after registration is closed.

As we celebrate our nation's independence this weekend I think we should also celebrate the great pastime of Miniature Golf. Although it did not originate here in the U.S. it has become one of our great family summer activities.

"Like its namesake, miniature golf started in Scotland, at the Ladies Putting Club of St. Andrews, which in 1867 had a "Himalayas" 18-hole putting green. (At the time, women were not permitted to swing the club past their shoulders.) James Barber's Thistle Du putting course, built in 1916 in Pinehurst, N.C., was America's first mini-golf course. During the Depression, more than 150 courses Manhattan. In 1964, Astroturf was invented, and soon after the game became a roadside attraction where parents could take their children for inexpensive fun activity, that like Saturday morning cartoons, most kids outgrow. That is, of course, if they don't decide to play professionally."Golf.Com

Miniature Golf has for some, gone beyond a fun night out with family and friends and become a seriously competitive sport. "Each October the world's best professional miniature golfers convene in Myrtle Beach to compete for the game’s most coveted title. Our Miniature Golf tournament will be played over 3 days August 4th, 5th, and 6th. Get your teams ready and hit your favorite mini-golf course to practice!

Do You Have What It Takes For Ultimate?

Our spotlight for the week is Ultimate. Initially called Ultimate Frisbee, but as it turns out, "Frisbee" is a trademarked name of the WHAM O Toy Company. So, now the sport just goes by the name Ultimate. Ultimate found its start on college campuses in the 1960's. It combines the best features of football, soccer, and basketball.

One interesting nugget of info is that Ultimate is what you call "self-officiated". Ultimate is unique in that it is refereed by the players themselves, even at World Championship level, according to a code of conduct known as "the Spirit of the Game". This places the responsibility for fair play on the players themselves. In that respect, playing Ultimate is a completely different experience to playing other sports. It's called, "Spirit Of The Game" in the Ultimate community.

Ultimate's self-officiated nature demands a strong spirit of sportsmanship and respect. The following description is from the official ultimate rules established by the Ultimate Players Association:

Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.

The game, explained as simply as possible:

Ultimate is played between two teams of seven players on a large rectangular pitch. A line drawn across the pitch at either end creates two "endzones" (like in American Football). These are the goal-scoring areas. A goal is scored when a team completes a pass to a player standing (or more likely running) in the endzone they are attacking.
Players cannot run with the disc. When you get the disc you must come to a stop and try to throw it to another player (a bit like netball). By passing from player to player, the offence attempts to work the disc up the pitch towards the endzone they are attacking. If the disc hits the ground or is intercepted or knocked down by the other team, then the opposition takes possession (a change of possession is called a "turnover", like American Football). Possession also changes if a receiver is outside the playing area when he or she catches it.
The defending team attempts to stop the team with the disc from making progress upfield by marking them (as in soccer or basketball). The theory is that the offence won't want to pass to a player who is being marked closely, as it's likely to result in an interception. So it boils down to the offence players trying to get free of their markers to receive a pass, while the defence makes every effort to stay with them in the hope of forcing a turnover.

This week we're all about Horseshoes. This is a game dating all the way back to the Roman Soldiers. During their idle hours, the soldiers occupied themselves with games that consisted of tossing metal rings over stakes pounded into the ground. Whether these first metal rings were actually horseshoes is a matter of some debate.

This year our Horseshoes Tournament will be held on Thursday August 13th at Sugarhouse Park. Here's the lowdown on the size of the playing field and point scoring. The stakes will be placed 40 feet apart. Ringers are worth three points and a "learner" (a shoe touching the stake) or a shoe that comes to rest with any part six inches or closer to the stake counts as one point. The game will be played to 40 points. So, start warming up your arms now!

Today's topic is our 5K Cross Country! This event will be held on Saturday August 1st at the Cottonwood Complex in conjunction with Opening Ceremonies. Here are some helpful hints and websites to help you on your journey to running a 5K. Who knows, maybe next a marathon?

Have you often wondered when you should replace your running shoes? Here are some guidelines.

The mileage on your shoes is high. A good rule of thumb is to replace your running shoes every 300-400 miles.
You're feeling pain (ie., muscle fatigue, shin splints, joint pain especially in your knees).
Your shoes fail the twist test. If you hold your running shoes at both ends and twist the shoe, it should feel firm. An old shoe or one that doesn't have proper support will twist easily.
Your soles are worn out.
Newer shoes feel much better.Some experts recommend that runners rotate two pairs of running shoes

So, today we're talking Basketball. Our basketball tournament will be played at the Taylorsville Recreation Center and will be the 18th, 19th and 20th of August. Remember that you should be wearing matching shirts otherwise things could get really confusing!
